Q&A: Capitals coach Barry Trotz on the spring of no slogans and being at peace with himself

Sitting down with Barry Trotz over the years never feels exactly like an interview; it’s something far less formal, far more casual and, ultimately, far more enjoyable.

A couple of years ago, I sat with Trotz on the Washington Capitals’ bus on the way to a team event at Andrews Air Force base in Maryland. The plan was that I would interview Trotz on the way out and captain Alex Ovechkin on the way back. But I had to find the Capitals’ communications staff as soon as we arrived and explain that we had only gotten to Trotz taking over as the coach and GM of the Dauphin (Manitoba) Kings when he was in his mid-20s. I needed more time.
